The Linen Sample

A square of cloth kept for reference, and quietly better after twenty years of being handled.

Undyed linen · Coastal Europe

A folded square of undyed linen on a pale surface

The record

It was cut as a reference square, the sort of thing a mill keeps to settle arguments about weight and colour. It was never meant to be looked at.

Twenty years of handling has done what washing cannot. The hand has softened, the weave has settled and the colour has moved a shade towards the wall it hangs beside.

It is the clearest test the House applies to anything it might one day make: does this improve with use, or does it merely survive it.
