The story
We sit with someone for an afternoon before we write a word. Not an interview so much as a long look at how a person works: what they refuse, what they repeat, what they throw away without ceremony.
Names are withheld by choice, theirs and ours. A photographer, an architect, a cabinetmaker. Strip away the reputation and what remains is the discipline, which is the only part worth passing on.
Each portrait opens onto the story it came from. Read the person first, then the place they were standing in; the two explain one another.
