The House of Bellourne · IV · The Keeping

Objects worth keeping.

A short inventory. Each one appears in a story, was made by someone, and is intended to outlast the person who owns it.

The story

The Collection is not a shop and is not trying to become one. It is the record of what we found in the rooms we were allowed into: a piece half finished on a bench, a print nobody signed, things kept for reasons their owners struggled to put into words.

We ask three questions of everything here. Who made it, and with what. Whether it improves or merely survives with use. And whether, in forty years, somebody would take the trouble to repair it.

When the Atelier opens, the first pieces will come from this inventory and from the workshops behind it. Nothing arrives before it is right.

The map

How a thing enters the Collection.

  • I

    The maker

Known by name, working by hand, and willing to be written about honestly.

  • II

    The material

Chosen for how it will look in ten years rather than on the day it is bought.

  • III

    The keeping

Repairable, unbranded, and better for having been used.

Wrought iron · The Steel Crossing

A section of riveted iron plate from a river crossing
