A Print, Unsigned
Sent to an archive by no one anybody could name, proof that objects outlive the reasons they were made.
Silver gelatin · San Aurelio

The record
The print arrived at a municipal archive in a plain envelope with no letter, no return address and no signature on the back. The date was written in pencil in a hand nobody has since identified.
It shows a street at the hour the shutters open again. Whoever made it stood further back than the picture required, which is the detail that gives the whole frame away: they were not photographing the street so much as the distance from it.
The paper has warmed at the edges. This is usually treated as damage. Here it reads as evidence, and no attempt has been made to correct it.

Where it appears
Three Steps Back
A photographer who had followed light across continents finds, beneath an old arch in southern Spain, that the most important movement is backwards.
What We Leave Standing
An architect who had spent thirty years imagining what comes next finds, beneath an old steel crossing on the edge of London, a question she had never thought to ask.
